Exploring the Ford Super Duty Model Lineup

The F-150 is the best-selling truck in America, but sometimes, you need a little more oomph to get the job done. That’s where Ford Super Duty trucks come in—with a lot of extra power and the same lofty standard of quality, there’s very little that can stand in your way. But, which one should you choose?

Let’s check out everything you need to know about the F-250, F-350, and F-450 to see which truck is the right fit.

Ford Super Duty Trim Levels and Price

All three main Super Duty models have the same streamlined selection of trims, and they all come with the same standard features. Unlike the F-150, there’s five to choose from:

  • XL
  • XLT
  • Lariat®
  • King Ranch®
  • Platinum®

In addition, they also share a number of available option packages, including the FX4 and Tremor® Off-Road Packages and the new Platinum Plus® Package, which upgrades the interior amenities with Venetian leather upholstery, a twin panel moonroof, a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, and more.

Despite having the same selection of trims, they all differ in price because they all have very different capabilities. The F-250 has a starting MSRP of $45,300, the F-350 starts at $46,595, and the F-450 starts at $59,955.

Ford Super Duty Engines and Specs

There are four total powertrains in the Super Duty lineup:

  • 6.8-liter DEVCT V8 Gas engine: 405 horsepower, 445 pound-feet of torque
  • 7.3-liter DEVCT V8 Gas engine: 430 horsepower, 485 pound-feet of torque
  • 6.7-liter OHV Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine: 475 horsepower, 1,050 pound-feet of torque
  • 6.7-liter High Output Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine: 500 horsepower, 1,200 pound-feet of torque

The F-250 and F-350 can be optioned with any of the four engines, while the F-450 is only available with the more powerful diesel engines.

Towing and Payload

Ford Super Duty Towing Capacities

Ford Super Duty Engines and Specs

Perhaps the biggest difference between the three models is the amount that they can tow. Towing specs depend on a few key factors, including the engine, body style, and whether your truck has dual rear wheels. The upshot is, while each model has an advertised max towing capacity, many models won’t be able to pull as much, which is why it’s so important to make sure your truck is configured for the job you need done.

Here’s each of their max towing capacities at a glance:

  • F-250:
    • Conventional towing: 22,000 pounds
    • Fifth-wheel/gooseneck: 23,000 pounds
  • F-350:
    • Conventional towing: 28,000 pounds
    • Fifth-wheel/gooseneck: 38,000 pounds
  • F-450:
    • Conventional towing: 30,000 pounds
    • Fifth-wheel/gooseneck: 40,000 pounds

Ford Super Duty Payload Capacities

Much like the towing specs, payload is highly dependent on how the truck is configured However, unlike with towing specs, models with gasoline engines tend to have a higher payload capacity than the ones with turbo diesels.

Check out their maximum payload ratings below:

  • F-250: 4,246 pounds
  • F-350: 8,000 pounds
  • F-450: 6,482 pounds

What About the F-550 and F-600?

Of course, there are a couple of other Ford Super Duty models. As you’d probably expect, the F-550 and F-600 are even larger and have even higher towing and payload capacities. In fact, they’re so powerful that they’re typically sold as Chassis Cab commercial vehicles. They can be upfitted with traditional beds, but more often, they come with factory upfits like dump truck beds, towing truck ramps, or utility truck boxes.
